Multi-published author Carmen Peone recently stopped by to share about her writing life.
Why did you start writing romantic suspense novels? I wrote the Seven Tine Ranch Romance series to honor my niece, who was a victim of domestic violence and abuse, and was a victim of murdered and missing indigenous women. We lost her in 2009 at the age of 23. After years of grief, I had to write about it in some way to honor her and all the women who are victims of abuse and DV. My goal is to bring awareness and help women seek safety. For anyone who needs assistance, there is a resource page on my website.
What’s the hardest part of writing romantic suspense? For this series, I had to relive the court proceedings over and over. I cried a lot, but that helped with the healing process. My grief and sorrow for her mother drove me to do what I can to help other women. People need to know that abuse of any kind is not love.
How do you research ways to kill someone for your books? For this series, my research came from real life. Though for Renewed Hope, I had my neighbor, a former Colville Tribal Police Officer, help me with police and task force procedures to assist my heroine’s efforts to find her young kidnapped son.
How do you come up with titles for your books? For this series, my titles are not of the normal romance genre. I based them on the stages of abuse and healing, especially through Christ. I have an in-depth explanation on my blog.
How do you pick the location/setting of your romantic suspense novels? Since the tragedy occurred on the Colville Reservation, I set the Seven Tine Ranch on this rez. The ranch connects the series as it becomes a safe place for women in need. I included three different women from three different reservations, two in which we have family, and one because it’s the home of the Pendleton Round-Up, a special place for First Americans.
What has been most rewarding about writing romantic suspense? The idea of bringing hope in Jesus is the most rewarding about writing the Seven Tine Ranch Romance series. In fiction, DM and abuse is not a popular read, especially in the Christian community, but the days of talking about hard topics are over. Love is bringing awareness, help, healing, and hope to those in hard situations. There is forgiveness, grace, and mercy in Jesus. We all need those three attributes. We all need His love, help, and healing.
What’s your go-to when you need a pick-me-up to keep writing? Easy. I saddle up and hit the trail. Or the water as I live a few miles from Lake Roosevelt. In the winter, I exercise or go for a walk. Or better, trek down to the barn and love on my horses. I also enjoy spending time with my grandkids.

Multi-published author Rebecca Hopewell recently stopped by my blog to share some about her writing life.
What’s the hardest part of writing romantic suspense? This might sound strange, but I have a hard time putting my characters in danger! My early drafts inevitably have moments where I’ve avoided writing a direct confrontation with an obstacle or danger. I don’t even realize I’m doing it until I get a note from my editor that says something like, “Can we see this happen on the page?”
What is your favorite spot for reading or reflecting on your current work-in-progress? There’s a green armchair by a window in our living room that used to belong to my husband’s grandparents, and it’s just wide enough for both me and our dog to snuggle on. Not only is it comfortable, but when our dog is snuggling with me, it stops me from jumping up just to do that one thing I forgot! I hand-edit my manuscript after the first draft, and this chair keeps me focused.
What’s your go-to when you need a pick-me-up to keep writing? Coffee. We switched to making pots of mostly decaf just so we could drink more cups without getting too wired. I try not to drink any after 12 p.m. but sometimes…
How do you pick the location/setting of your romantic suspense novels? Setting is one of my very favorite things to write, so I usually choose places where I’ve spent enough time to get the feel of the area. Lake Tahoe is a few hours away, and more than once, our family has gotten stuck up there because of snowstorms. I absolutely love action/suspense stories set in the mountains, so when I came up with the idea for my first Love Inspired Suspense story, I thought Tahoe would be a perfect location. I’m just finishing up one more book set in this area, and then I’m thinking of writing about someplace new. Perhaps somewhere in the Canadian wilderness?
How do you ensure your books are accurate? When I write characters that are outside my personal experience, I ask my friends for help! For example, High-Stakes Blizzard featured a heroine who was a nurse, so I asked my nurse friend who worked in the ER to read over the pages where the heroine was treating a wound. Danger on the Peaks features a hero who is Chinese American, so two of my Chinese American author friends gave me feedback. His family owns a ranch, so another author friend who grew up on a ranch looked over a few chapters. Basically, I tap into my community! And the internet. Of course, I’m sure I still make mistakes, but I try my best to make the books feel as real as I can.

Multi-published author Cate Nolan recently stopped by my blog to share some about her writing life.
Why did you start writing romantic suspense novels? I actually started out writing historical, but I always loved reading romantic suspense. Back in 2013, the Love Inspired editors announced a “Killer Voices” contest to find new talent for Love Inspired Suspense. I had followed Emily Rodmell on social media, and I knew she loved witness protection stories. The first round of the contest just required a first page. I had an idea for a WITSEC story, so I submitted it. Emily chose me for her team, and I progressed step by step until I had to submit the full manuscript. It was a whirlwind, and then Emily called to tell me they were buying Christmas in Hiding. I’ve been writing suspense ever since because I discovered I love having that extra element to add to the story.
When do you find time to write? My best answer to that question is one word: Summer. During the school year, I teach grades six to eight English Language Arts, so my days are pretty full. I try to manage 1,000 words a day during the school year, but summer is the time I really get to set everything aside and focus on my stories.
Where do you get the inspiration for your plots? I literally get my ideas everywhere. My brain seems to be constantly open to suggestion. I was walking the dog with my daughter recently, and we saw something. I said, “That gives me an idea for a story.” She looked at me and said, “Let’s be honest. What doesn’t give you an idea for a story?” She’s not wrong. For example, I was walking to school one day, and I saw an abandoned veil on the ground in a child’s size, most likely lost by a young girl making her First Holy Communion. By the time I got to school that muddied veil had sparked an entire story.
How do you pick the location/setting of your romantic suspense novels? Most often the location is dictated by the characters and the story I want to tell. I have to think about where that would work best. Sometimes, the setting is triggered by something I discover in my research. For example, Colorado Mountain Kidnapping is about an ex-Army Ranger who suffers from PTSD. I knew I wanted him in a remote area. Which of your books is your favorite and why? I chose this question, but I don’t actually have the answer. I know it’s a cliche, but that’s like trying to choose your favorite child. You love them all for different reasons. Christmas in Hiding will always be a favorite because it was my first. I fell in love with Jackson and Callie, and didn’t think I’d ever love any other characters the same. But then came Christine and Blake in Texas Witness Threat. They hold a special place in my heart because a lot of people were turned off by the snake on the cover. I’ve since learned to cover it with a “Signed by the Author” sticker. Colorado Mountain Kidnapping is really special to me because Adam Dalton is the kind of heroic man who sacrifices his own well-being to protect the innocent. He suffers from PTSD, but he pushed through because it’s what he needs to do for Isabelle and the children. Who wouldn’t love a hero like that?
