Sami A. Abrams recently stopped by my blog to share some about her writing life.
When do you find time to write? I’m a full-time kindergarten teacher, so my writing time comes in the afternoons or evenings during the week. Since my husband is a night owl and I tend to get up early, I’ll also spend time on the weekends before he wakes for the day. Basically, I write whenever I can carve out time.
What’s the weirdest way someone has died or been killed in your novels? I don’t really have a weird way that someone has died, but I think that trying to poison my heroine with antifreeze ranks up there with weird.
What does your family think of your writing romantic suspense? My kids think it’s pretty awesome that I’m a writer, and my husband is extremely supportive. But as for the romantic suspense part, there are a few in my family that think I’m crazy writing about killers.
How do you ensure your books are accurate?
I do a lot of internet searches to make sure my facts are accurate. However, my go-to is asking friends who have experience in whatever I’m writing. For example, if it’s a medical question, I’ll go to my nurse friends. For my law enforcement questions, I have a fantastic consultant that answers all my crazy questions.
How do you pick the location/setting of your romantic suspense novels?
I love small-town settings, but don’t like using real locations because I don’t want to get it wrong. So instead, I use places that I’m familiar with and create fictious locations by combining several small towns.

Let me introduce you to my Christmas novella, Mistletoe & Murder. I enjoyed writing this romantic suspense story with a Cyrano de Bergerace storyline. As a writer, I’ve always been intrigued by the story of two people falling in love through letters.
When my husband and I were dating, we wrote a lot of emails back and forth—one of the modern-day equivalent of letters! One of my daughters (a college freshman) loves the movie, “You’ve Got Mail,” which is one of many iterations of that storyline.
In Mistletoe & Murder, the letters happened offstage, and are only referenced as part of the background of the current happenings. Here’s more about the plot of Mistletoe & Murder:
Alec Stratman comes home to Twin Oaks, Virginia, after his Army retirement to contemplate his reentry into civilian life. Instead he’s greeted with the murder of his beloved Great-Aunt Heloise.
For Isabella Montoya, the loss of Heloise Stratman Thatcher goes beyond the end of a job. Heloise had encouraged Isabella to follow her dreams and helped fund her studies. Now, accused of her mentor’s murder, Isabella is scrambling to prove her innocence.
Since his great-aunt had written glowing letters about Isabella, Alec is unwilling to believe the police’s suspicion of the former housekeeper. Instead, he works to help clear her name.
Will Isabella and Alec be able to navigate the secrets that threaten to derail their budding romance and uncover the truth about Heloise’s death before the killer strikes again?
Now, it’s time to continue the scavenger hunt! Go to the book on Amazon at this link.

Jerusha Agen recently stopped by to share some about her writing life. Plus, she’s giving away one copy of her most recent romantic suspense, Hidden Danger. See below for details.
Why did you start writing romantic suspense novels? My first published series was the Sisters Redeemed Series—a trilogy of contemporary romances. With each book in the series that I wrote, I found I naturally added more and more elements of suspense. By the end of the series, the third book could have been categorized in the suspense genre from its content. I realized that I enjoyed writing stories with suspense most of all and decided to keep doing it from then on!
When do you find time to write? I’ve found that I really have to make time to write, since I’ll definitely never find any extra time to do so. I have a puppy right now who takes up a lot of time, so I have to be especially diligent in making sure I force in writing time whenever I can. I need to make an effort to fit in writing as a high priority, even if I only have small increments of time that day. But I’m most productive when I schedule chunks of time to write and stick to that schedule.
How do you come up with titles for your books? I love coming up with titles! I like to build into my titles special significance, often in symbolism or thematic meaning drawn from the book itself. But for suspense, the top priority is making the title sound thrilling and suspenseful!
What’s your go-to when you need a pick-me-up to keep writing? Candy cherry slices and chocolate! Lots of chocolate!
About Jerusha Agen Jerusha Agen imagines danger around every corner, but knows God is there, too. So naturally, she writes romantic suspense infused with the hope of salvation in Jesus Christ.
