A Conversation With Gail Pallotta

Award-winning author Gail Pallotta’s a wife, mom, swimmer and bargain shopper who loves God, beach sunsets and getting together with friends and family. She’s a former regional writer of the year for American Christian Writers Association, a Grace Awards Finalist and a Reader’s Favorite 2017 Book Award winner.

Where do you get inspiration for your plots?
Gail: From events happening around me, in the newspaper or on television. News of dwindling Christianity in America over a number of years inspired me to write Breaking Barriers. The “God Is Dead” attempt to taint Christianity in the 1960s impacted me. However, the extent to which someone wanted to wipe out my faith hit me when my daughter started first grade. She was reprimanded for wearing a cross to school. At the Thanksgiving open house, one child’s drawing was yanked from the hallway because she wrote on it that the Pilgrims gave thanks to God. Christmas became the winter holidays and Christmas carols were forbidden. Nativity scenes were banned from public sites. The list went on and on, and I asked, “What if…?”

How do you pick the location/setting of your romantic suspense novels?
Gail: I like to use places where I’ve lived or visited. I set most of Breaking Barriers in the Florida Panhandle, because I love to spend time there and know the area well. The hero and heroine take a vacation to the Everglades. Even though I’ve never taken a sightseeing romp through the swamp, I’ve traveled in the surrounding region. While a location may be familiar to me, I still read about it and speak with experts who know it well.

How do you ensure your books are accurate?
Gail: Even though I may have some knowledge or experience of factual information in my books, I research all of the details by reading about the subject matter and interviewing professionals. I often ask an expert to read over the pages containing the topic of their expertise.
