David ‘Hooks’ Mary, Chapter 18 continued, Phantom Love

David stretched his arms above his head as he read Mary’s last message. She certainly needed more prodding than most, but he knew she was a prize worth winning.

Mary: U still there?
David: Yes. These past few months have meant so much to me. I don’t think I can do this without you, Mary. Just knowing I have your support will help me find the strength to make it through the next six months.

There, that ought to give her enough of a push to commit. Once he had her assurance, he could start the delicate task of reeling her in.

Mary: Tell me what I can do to help.
David: I am dancing by my chair with the thought that you will be by my side throughout this process.
Mary: I’d like to see you dancing.
David: You’d regret it. I’m sure I look like a chicken or some other barnyard animal flapping its wings and squawking. However, I’d dance in front of the entire world if it brought a smile to your luscious lips.

“David?”

He swiveled in his chair at the sound of Sylvia’s voice behind him. “What’s up, boss lady?”

Sylvia frowned. “You know I don’t like it when you call me that.”

David smiled. “So sue me.”

“You’re in a good mood.” Sylvia perched her hip on the corner of the desk, careful not to upset the three large computer monitors.

“You bet I am. I just landed a big one.”

She straightened up. “Mary Divers?”

He nodded, his eyes returning to the computer screen of their chat. “Yep. She’s agreed to help me raise funds for Peru.”

Sylvia shook her head. “I honestly thought you had bitten off more than you could chew with that one, but I should have known you could pull it off.”

“Never underestimate me.” He typed in a response to Mary’s comment and turned back to Sylvia.

“Now, where’s my reward for being such a good boy?”

Sylvia raised her eyebrows. “You haven’t sealed the deal yet. Don’t get too cocky. It’s the quiet ones that can fool you, just remember that.”

David stood abruptly and Sylvia took a quick step back. He reached over and placed his hand behind her head, bringing her face close to his for a kiss that left them both panting for breath.

He winked at her. “I’ll come up later for the rest. Now, I have fifteen more minutes to go with my chat with Mary.” David sat back down and rolled his chair back in place in front of his keyboard.

“If I didn’t know better, I’d say you’re actually enjoying your chats with her.” Sylvia tossed over her shoulder as she walked to the door.

David blew her a kiss as she disappeared through the door. Her comment had struck a bit too close to the truth for his peace of mind. It wouldn’t do to feel sorry for a mark.
