A Conversation With Donna Schlachter

Donna Schlachter writes historical suspense and contemporary suspense. She has ghostwritten several projects, but still gets a thrill out of seeing her name on the cover.

What’s the hardest part of writing romantic suspense?
Donna: For me, getting the romance in is tough. I tend to focus on the suspense, danger, mystery, villains, and plot and subplot.

How do you connect with your characters?
Donna: I interview them. I like to ask questions such as What didn’t I let you do that you wish you could have done? Then I go back and write that in.

Where do you get the inspiration for your plots?
Donna: Everywhere. Song lyrics. Newspaper headlines. Recently I got an idea for a book of short stories about an old typewriter I restored. One book I wrote was based on a picture in a newspaper of the police detective who was leading Lee Harvey Oswald from the jail when Jack Ruby shot him. Another book was based on a true story about love letters found in an old puzzle box.

Current book: The Physics of Love
The Physics of Love is the story of an unredeemable woman looking for love, of an unwanted child looking for a family, and of a God who hears the cry of their heart.
